Bedbug Woes Continue,

This surge follows similar outbreaks in countries like South Korea and France, causing alarm among the public as travel rebounds post-COVID-19. Bedbugs, nocturnal pests around 5 millimeters long, hide in furniture cracks during the day and feed on humans at night, causing itchy welts. While bedbugs declined in Japan in the 1970s due to insecticide use, resistance developed around 2000. Tokyo’s pest control association reported 306 bedbug consultations in November, surpassing 2022’s total. Osaka saw 307 consultations by November-end, a 50% increase from the previous year. Nationwide consultations in fiscal 2022 rose fivefold since fiscal 2009, reaching 683.

Masaru Natsuaki, president of the Japan Society of Medical Entomology and Zoology, warns that bedbug infestations occur nationwide, emphasizing the need for preventive measures. Overseas, South Korea and France experienced bedbug outbreaks, prompting extermination campaigns. Natsuaki suggests sealing belongings in plastic bags when traveling but emphasizes that bedbugs don’t transmit diseases, alleviating unnecessary fear.
