California State University Faculty Reach Deal
A pivotal development, faculty members at California State University (CSU) reached a tentative contract agreement on Monday, the same day that nearly 30,000 professors, librarians, coaches, and other workers initiated a strike at the nation’s largest public university system, according to the union’s announcement.
The California Faculty Association (CFA) disclosed that its members, who had planned a weeklong walkout demanding higher wages, will return to work Tuesday, marking a shift from their initial strike strategy.

CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcรญa expressed satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing its role in fairly compensating the valued faculty while ensuring the university system’s long-term financial sustainability.
The strike unfolded two weeks after CSU officials unilaterally offered a 5% pay raise this year, effective Jan. 31, falling significantly short of the 12% increase sought by the union. The tentative agreement proposes a 5% raise retroactive to the previous year and an additional 5% raise on July 1, along with an increase in the minimum wage for the lowest-paid faculty, according to the union.
As the strike coincided with the start of the new CSU semester, potential class cancellations loomed for the system’s 450,000 students if faculty members refused to cross picket lines. The California Faculty Association represents approximately 29,000 workers.

Gabriela Alvarez, a Cal State Long Beach student, highlighted the importance of supporting professors, rejecting impending tuition hikes, and advocating for more student resources.
The CFA had previously staged one-day walkouts in December on four campuses, pressing for higher pay, manageable workloads, and increased parental leave. The university’s reserve funds were a point of contention, with the union claiming surplus funds were available, while CSU officials argued that such reserves are earmarked for emergencies like wildfires or earthquakes.

California has seen legislative changes, granting workers more paid sick leave and increased wages for specific sectors. In 2022, University of California System teaching assistants and graduate student workers went on strike for a month, impacting classes during the fall semester’s closure.
