Princess Aiko Joins Japanese Red Cross

Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, will join the Japanese Red Cross Society in April after graduating from university, as announced by the Imperial Household Agency.

While maintaining her official duties as a member of the imperial family, the 22-year-old princess expressed her longstanding interest in working for the society, which has close ties with the imperial family.

In a statement, Princess Aiko expressed her happiness and determination to contribute to the Japanese Red Cross Society’s work, emphasizing her desire to be of help to the people and society.

As a contract employee, she will commute to the society’s headquarters in Tokyo’s Minato Ward. The details of her specific role are yet to be decided.

Princess Aiko, currently a fourth-year student at Gakushuin University, submitted a graduation thesis on Waka poems, a classic form of Japanese poetry from the medieval era.

Her visit to the Japanese Red Cross Society in October, accompanied by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, aimed to deepen her understanding of the organization’s relief activities, particularly after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake.
