New Study Warns of Potential “Heart Failure Pandemic” Following COVID-19 Infections

A recent study, Japanese researchers, including experts from Riken, Japan’s premier scientific institute, have uncovered a concerning link between COVID-19 and an increased risk of heart failure. The study, published in the renowned scientific journal iScience, suggests the possibility of a looming “heart failure pandemic.”

The research team focused on the impact of persistent viral infection in the hearts of COVID-19 patients, even in the absence of noticeable heart disease. They highlighted the prevalence of ACE2 receptors – the virus entry point – in the heart, raising concerns about potential long-term cardiac complications.

Using induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, the researchers mimicked heart tissue and observed that a significant viral load led to a decline in cardiac function, which did not fully recover. Even with a reduced viral load, the infection persisted for four weeks, indicating a potential risk for some patients to develop heart failure over time.

Interestingly, the study revealed that under hypoxic conditions, where cardiac function was reduced, uninfected cells recovered after a certain time. In contrast, cells persistently infected with a small amount of the virus showed weakened recovery abilities, emphasizing the potential long-lasting impact of viral infection on heart health.

Riken Research Leader Hidetoshi Masumoto, an expert in regenerative medicine, underscored the importance of establishing testing systems and treatment methods. He expressed the need to prepare for a possible “heart failure pandemic” characterized by a rapid increase in the number of patients experiencing heart failure due to persistent viral infections.
