In a seamless operation, the H-2A Launch Vehicle No. 48 soared from the Tanegashima Space Center carrying Japan’s latest Information-Gathering Satellite, “Optical-8.” The launch, executed at 1:44 p.m. on Friday, was declared a success as the satellite successfully detached from the rocket and entered orbit.

The Information-Gathering Satellite (IGS), often functioning as a reconnaissance satellite, plays a crucial role in monitoring military installations, notably in North Korea, and aids in assessing disaster-stricken areas.

With a total of 10 IGS currently operational, the fleet includes optical satellites providing high-resolution daytime imagery and radar satellites capable of imaging during nighttime and adverse weather conditions. Optical-8, launched as the successor to an existing optical satellite, will enhance Japan’s capabilities, particularly given its predecessor’s prolonged service beyond its initial design life.
