China Unveils State-of-the-Art Antarctic Research Station in the Ross Sea
Situated on the rocky coast of Inexpressible Island in the icy Ross Sea, Qinling neighbors the U.S. McMurdo station. This marks China’s fifth research station in Antarctica, with construction initiated in 2018 and completion delayed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In November, China deployed its largest Antarctic fleet with over 460 personnel to expedite the station’s completion.

Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, emphasized that the station’s construction aligns with international rules, contributing to global scientific understanding of Antarctica. President Xi Jinping commended the station’s opening, urging workers to collaborate with the international community in exploring, protecting, and utilizing the polar region.
The Qinling station’s inauguration is expected to enhance humanity’s scientific knowledge of Antarctica, fostering peace and sustainable development in the region. China’s investment in Antarctic research underscores its commitment to global scientific cooperation and environmental stewardship.
