Iran Targets Israel;

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Target Israeli “Spy Headquarters” in Kurdistan and Strike ISIS in Syria

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards carried out an attack on what they referred to as the “spy headquarters” of Israel in Iraq‘s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, as reported by state media on Monday. Simultaneously, the elite force conducted strikes in Syria targeting the Islamic State. These actions contribute to escalating concerns over the broader conflict that has engulfed the Middle East since the commencement of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on October 7. Iran’s allies, including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, have entered the fray, intensifying the regional turmoil.

The Guards justified their attacks, stating it was in response to recent perceived atrocities by the “Zionist regime,” leading to the killing of Guards commanders and members of the Axis of Resistance. The statement indicated the destruction of one of Mossad’s main espionage headquarters in Iraq’s Kurdistan region through ballistic missiles. Iran had previously vowed revenge for the killing of three Guards members in Syria, including a senior commander serving as a military adviser.

Amidst the ongoing conflict triggered by the Israel-Hamas war, over 130 fighters of Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah have been killed in hostilities following Hamas fighters’ incursion into Israeli territory. The Guards emphasized their commitment to continuing offensive operations until avenging the last drops of martyrs’ blood.

In addition to the strikes near the U.S. consulate in Erbil, the Guards reported firing ballistic missiles in Syria, targeting the perpetrators of terrorist operations, including the Islamic State. The situation has further complicated an already tense Middle East, with the region grappling with the consequences of heightened hostilities.

Reports indicate casualties resulting from the Erbil strikes, leading to condemnation from Iraqi Kurdish Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who labeled it a “crime against the Kurdish people.” Among the casualties was multimillionaire Kurdish businessman Peshraw Dizayee and members of his family, highlighting the human toll of the conflict.

While these developments unfold, verifying reports remains challenging, and Israeli government officials were not immediately available for comment. The incident has also prompted a halt in air traffic at Erbil airport, adding to the disruptions caused by the ongoing tensions.

Iran’s previous actions in Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region have been framed as responses to perceived threats from Iranian separatist groups and alleged agents of Israel. As the situation evolves, Baghdad has attempted to address Iranian concerns over separatist groups in the border region, implementing security measures in a 2023 agreement with Tehran. The complex dynamics in the Middle East continue to pose challenges, with the potential for further escalation.
